We are taking a short break this week, and will be back with our next episode within the week. Kerry Anne is on a short trip with her family, and I am nursing Derek here at home. He is out of the hospital, and is reclining on the couch next to me as I type this.

Sorry about last week's show. There was a 45 second space of dead air in the middle. This was my attempt of being smart and adding a little song in the middle, and I guess it did not work. My Mad Skillz at audio production are still developing.

I did buy a great drugsore foundation this week, and will talk about it in the next show. Stay tuned!!

Derek, husband of Airdrie, and our producer, is currently in the hospital recovering from some heavy-duty surgery to remove his colorectal cancer. Updates can be found at Derek's blog, and his dad's blog. Many of you have offered your support to Airdrie and Derek, and we thank you for all the good wishes.

We'll be up and running again within a couple of weeks, but Airdrie really needs some time to recover from recent events.

Stay tuned for some major changes to the site, and a show coming at you from Las Vegas, Nevada, where we'll be reporting on the Cosmoprof North America 2007 conference.

Carefree Face & Bikini Total Wax Strip Kit

I tried Carefree Face & Bikini Total Wax Strip Kit, and was thrilled with the results on my bikini line. It wasn't nearly as painful as I thought, and it was so easy to use.

This is a "cold wax" kit, meaning that you don't have to heat the wax; you simply warm the strips between your hands for five seconds and you're ready to go. The Carefree kit comes with a "pre-wax lotion" that contains lidocaine to numb the skin slightly before you apply the wax, and moist towelettes to remove the residual wax when you're done. This is a great kit for beginners because it is so easy to use. Much less post-wax skin irritation than I had when I went to the esthetetician, too. Good luck! Retails for $7.99US and may not be available in Canada.

L'Oreal Color Riche Lipstick

L'Oreal claims this product to be "protective and nurturing". I was pleasantly surprised to find the matte shade I picked up to be significantly less drying than some of the higher end matte lipsticks I've used. The shade I chose, #901, is a neutral pink called Tafetta Satin that is lovely on my fair complexion. The Colour Riche line has a nice scent and a slight, almost perfumey taste, which I don't mind. Lots of shades and finishes. Retails for $9.95US

This week Airdrie reviews two CRAPTACULAR products.

1. The La Cross Heated Lash Curler is a total piece of crap. It does not work at all. If anyone knows a heated lash curler that actually works please email me. I have very straight lashes.

2. The Depy Face by Velvet Touch hair remover does a great job removing skin from the face, but the hair stays behind. It might be good for sanding the back deck, but does not remove fine hair from the face, as it claims. It is a horrible product. Don't buy it. Can I say that? You bet I can.

Kerry Anne's Reviews

My recent purchase of Almay Intense i-Color for Blue Eyes system was not well thought out. I bought the "Play Up" collection. Yes, I have blue eyes, but I should have taken a closer look at the shadow colours and thought critically about whether the shades would be a good match for me. They weren't. The brown was decent, but the blues were shimmery, unflattering and left me with a bruised look. Air gave them try as well, with the same results. Perhaps we just didn't have the right skin tones. Almay also makes palettes for brown, green and hazel eyes. The trio for hazel eyes would have suited my blue eyes much better.

Despite the colour being all wrong for me, the shadow itself was long-lasting and had good pigments. It cost me $9.99CA or about $7.50US.

On the positive side, the Intense i-Color Bring Out Eyeliner is fabulous. The Brown Topaz does complement my eyes and the pencil itself is excellent quality. It is retractable, with a built-in sharpener, and is long-lasting while still being blendable. It retails for $9.99CA or $7.50US.

Vichy Lumineuse Sheer Radiance Tinted Moisturizer

This is a beautiful product. I'm not one for heavy foundation, as I think it makes me look cheap and crusty. This is an excellent alternative. It is a light moisturizer that provides wonderfully sheer coverage. If you are looking for something that will cover flaws, this will not work for you. It imparts a natural look and is perfect for summer. Almost perfect...it contains no sunscreen and only comes in two shades. Lumineuse is available in two formulations, one for dry skin and another for combination/oily complexions. It retails for $26.99CA.

Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Cream

I like this lightweight moisturizer, that contains Retinol, a form of Vitamin A, to combat wrinkles, and salicylic acid, to fight acne. For a gal with crow's feet and adult zit syndrome, my skin has been looking quite nice lately, thank you very much. I'm always pleased to find a face cream that won't clog my pores and aggravate my tendency to break out. Don't get it in your eyes either, it will sting. Contains no sunscreen. It usually runs for under $20, and I purchased it on sale for $13.99.

Dream Cream from Lush. ($25 Cdn) This hand and body lotion has a rich moisturizers and lavender oil for healing skin. I use it after I shave my legs, and my daughter uses it on her eczema. It is a wonderful cream. They will give you a sample if you would like to try it.

Diva Cup. ($40 Cdn) Listen to the full review for information about this menstrual cup. I really like it, and I enjoy making a smaller footprint on the Earth by using less tampons.

Reality Check

We have a fun one this week. The current fashion of low-waist jeans and tight t-shirts aren't for every body, and this week we talk about wearing clothes that flatter your shape. Rebecca, aka Miss604, is a Vancouver blogger and podcaster who tackles this issue in her amusing post about "muffin-tops".

Shiseido Advanced Volume Mascara

I was recently turned onto Shiseido's Advanced Volume Mascara by a makeup artist who swears by this product. It doesn't come cheap ($27CA or $22US), but I LOVE it. It gives "good lash", by building volume, definition and length. You can also put tons on, and it still looks fine with no clumping or Tammy Faye freakishness. It comes in five shades. I chose the AV1 which is a lovely jet black that really brings out the colour of my eyes.

Here's the rub...it only comes in a waterproof formulation, and because of that, it's a challenge to remove at the end of the day. If you're going to purchase this mascara, make sure you've got a quality oil-based eye makeup remover and the patience required to take it off.

Revlon Makeup Eraser Pen

I'm really impressed with this product that makes history of eye and lip makeup mistakes. It is a quick-fix stick that looks similar to a felt-tipped magic marker. Just swipe the pen over the smudge and voila, it's gone. It leaves a bit of a greasy residue, which dries fast, and won't affect the rest of your makeup. It's perfect for liquid/gel/cream eyeliner mistakes, mascara smudges and long-wearing lipstick blunders. A great item to throw into your purse, too! $7.99US and $10CA

Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow

I picked-up this palette of four creme shadows on sale at the drugstore recently. Available in 12 color groups, the one I purchased is called Seashells. I really like this product because it works nicely as a shadow and a highlighter for inner and under eyes.

Kiehl's Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

At $16.50 US, this eye makeup remover is priced competitively with other designer brands. I love, love, love this product. I got a sample the other day, and you all have to go get yourselves a sample of this, too. Or, just trust me and go buy a bottle. It smells wonderful, it is not too greasy, and it does not irritate my eyes at all. Added bonus: I love the smell. I actually look forward to removing my eye makeup with this product. Go get it.

UPDATE: Not intended to remove waterproof or water-resistant eye make-up.

Reality Check:

Episode #62 - Sunless Tanning

This week it's all about getting your faux glow on, sensibly (meaning we don't want you to look orange, or tanorexic).

A great online source for all things fake tan is Sunless.com, a site that has information on everything from proper exfoliation and application, to product reviews and message boards.

If you are planning on getting a fake tan for an event, make sure you give yourself enough time to avoid any disasters. Many a woman has fallen victim to the pitfalls of the fake-bake including streaking, undesirable skin colour, uneven application, or the dreaded orange palm/knee/ankle/elbow syndrome.

Also, the products often stink and stain clothing. Your best bet is to apply before bedtime, and after you have thoroughly exfoliated the areas on which you plan to apply product. Your partner may refuse to sleep with you due to the self-tanner odor, but hey, better you subject him (or her) to it rather than being the office pariah!

If you have an important event that you want to look extra swanky for, go spend the money and get yourself a Mystic Tan, or a Fantasy Tan. Honestly, the even colour is worth the extra cash you spend. Airdrie and Kerry Anne both heartily endorse Mystic tanning.

1. Maybelline's Shadow Stylist

At the recommendation of a friend, I tried Maybelline's Shadow Stylist and, hot damn, I like it. Shadow Stylist can be used as a regular shadow, or as a substitute for eyeliner when using the darker shades. It has a sponge tip applicator and is very blendable. The pigments are also great and the colour stays put all day. I wish their colour selection was a little better, as most of the twelve shades are a tad shiny and pastel-like, and the powder has a tendency to fall beneath the eye upon application it you don't tap the brush a bit. Quibbles aside, this is going to be a permanent addition to my makeup bag. It retails for $7.99CA or $5.99US.

2. Inglot Blush

I was in the local mall the other day, when I happened upon a store that was undeniably MAC-like, yet not MAC. It is Inglot, and although the name sounds like a piece of IKEA furniture, it is actually a Polish cosmetic line now migrating to North America and other parts of the world.

They have a wonderful array of products in bright colours with packaging similar to, ahem, MAC. I picked up one of their AMC (Advanced Makeup Components) blushes and was very impressed by the richness of it's colour. Inglot carries a full range of cosmetics and brushes and the shade selection for their nail polishes and eye shadows are in the hundreds. I paid $22CA for a blush, which I thought was steep, but I'm happy with it.

In this show, I give Kerry-Anne a mud mask hand treatment, and describe how both these masks are applied. Listen to the show for a full review of both products.

1. Mask of Magnaminty. By Lush. I have been using this product on and off for a couple of years. It is wonderful. Ground-up aduki beans lets this green mud mask double as a scrub. With a shelf-life of four months, this product does go bad if you don't use it, and I recommend buying the small tub for that reason. ($9.95 CDN)

2. Botanics Conditioning Clay Mask. By Boots. As we mentioned last week, "Boots No. 7" products are now available at select Shopper's Drug Mart stores in Canada and Target in the USA. I went to check it out, and noticed that Boots has another line called "Boots Botanics." I picked-up the Conditioning Clay Mask from this line, as well as three products from the No. 7 line (that I will review in future shows.) I really love this mud mask, and at $9.99, the price is right. I noticed an improvement in my nose-area blackheads with just two uses. I am also using a three-times per week micro-dermabrasion, which is also helping in that area.

* Did you know that when a crush lasts longer than three months it is often called Limerence?
* The person you have a crush on is called the Limerent Object (LO). While it's always fun to have a little crush, bad crushes can interfere with your life if they are not understood.

Episode #57 - Secret Clinical, Nair Cire Divine and much more

Here is the latest episode of Lip Gloss and Laptops (you can also get the MP3 file directly).

1. Secret Clinical Strength

We tried the Powder Protection scent, which settles into a fresh fragrance that is actually not too powdery. This antiperspirant is for women who sweat heavily. The product is to be applied at night, when the body's sweat prodcution slows down, and it keeps you fresh through the next day. We found that it really is an effective product, but does not stop underarm perspiration completely. Unlike some other prescription strength antiperspirants, it doesn't sting. Two thumbs up! It retails for $7.99 to $9.99US and is also available in Light and Fresh scent.

2. Benefit Ooh La Lift

Benefit claims this product feels like an instant eye lift. I beg to differ. This is an eye "depuffer" that I found ineffective in that capacity. What I do like about it is that it serves as a terrific substitute for concealer when combined with an illuminating stick like Benefit's eye bright or CoverGirl's CG Smoothers Concealer-Illuminator. I generally have problems with concealer, which settles into the fine lines around my eyes. This product is a great alternative. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the product to be used alone as it serves little purpose, particularly with a price tag of $20US/$25CA.

3. Lancome Fatale Mascara

Lancome has a pretty good track record for mascara. Their Definicils is a classic. Fatale? Perhaps more trouble than it is worth.
Fatale is touted as an "exceptional Volume Sculpting 3D Comb-Mascara". The applicator for this mascara is a three-sided plastic comb. It isn't easy to apply, and easily creates a clumped-up "monolash" look. When I use it, I have to comb my lashes out afterward with a clean mascara brush, which is inconvenient and a bit counter-productive. The thing is, after I do this, I really love how my lashes look; long, thick and rather striking. The formula didn't budge during daily wear, but did smudge after an hour at the gym in the evening. I'm willing to work with this one to see if I can perfect the application process. The goopiness and and the fact that it isn't very user-friendly prevent me from recommending this. It is available in two colours, Brown and Black, and retails for $23US/$29CA.

4. Nair "Cire Divine" No Strip Wax ($15.99 CDN)

This microwaveable wax comes with a temperature indicator wand, to check that the product is not too hot before you apply it. Cool science! The warm wax applies easily, and to my pleasure, does not hurt a lot when removed. I was surprised to see how effective it is. I had never used a no-strip wax before, and was a little curious. I was not disappointed. I used this product to touch-up my professional bikini-wax. Listen to the show for an in-depth discussion on "taming the bush".

5. L'Oreal ReFinish Micro-Dermabrasion Kit (≈$30 CDN)

This two-step drugstore micro-dermabrasion kit is wonderful and addictive. Kerry Anne states that micro-dermabrasion is good for the self-esteem! Listen to the show for a complete review. I am sad to say that the L'Oreal.com website is a little complicated and does not let me provide a direct link to this product. You can navigate the page yourself if you so desire.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an abrasive skin cleansing process that removes the stratum corneum, the top layer of our skin. It clears pores, and removes skin imperfections such as fine lines, signs of sun damage, scarring and skin discolourations. It can be done at a spa by a professional esthetician, or at home. KA purchased a home microdermabrasion kit, Life Brand's Revive from Shoppers Drug Mart. I've noticed that my skin looks more vibrant and feels much softer. It's so easy and I'm fully hooked. I love microdermabrasion! L'Oreal (ReFinish) and Neutrogena both make reputable home kits under $30.

Shiseido Lip Gloss

Shiseido Lip Gloss is a beautiful, sheer gloss that we think is the ANTI-LipGlass (MAC). Why? Because it is not sticky or tacky at all. It glides on beautifully with a hint of colour. It's available in twelve shades and retails for $20. (And we still like LipGlass, but the "lack of tack" on this one is a refreshing change.)

The Face Shop

The Face Shop is a South Korea-based retailer of body, bath, skin care and make-up products aimed at both women and men. It was founded in 1962 as a wholesale manufacturer of cosmetics. In 2003 the first retail stores opened, and spread rapidly. As of December 2005, there were 400 Face Shop branches in South Korea. The company's marketing is largely based on natural products (Wikipedia) Now available all over the world, the Face Shop has many products. The nail polish is what Airdrie tried. Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair

I’ve been using the Advanced Night Repair Protective Recovery Complex nightly on my face for one week, and my skin feels very smooth. This product is an Estee Lauder classic, being one of their big sellers for the last twenty years. The company claims that the serum repairs past skin damage while protecting it from further environmental damage. While I don’t know how well it actually repairs the skin, it does leave it feeling lovely. $46.50 - $73.

Advanced Night Repair Eye Cream treats eye puffiness, dark circles and lines. It is a nice eye cream. Again, not sure if it lives up to it’s claims, but it works for me well enough. $48US for 0.5 oz.

New is the Advanced Night Repair Concentrate Recovery Boosting Complex, which boasts “5 times the concentration of the patented recovery complex”. It is recommended for use before and after intense skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, or excess environmental exposure. $85US for 1 oz.

Avon Sweet Honesty

Sweet Honesty by Avon: Airdrie has been using the Sweet Honesty roll-on antiperspirant lately ($1.99) and also enjoys the pink plasic jar full of skin softener cream. This product line has the classic Avon Sweet Honesty scent: honey, citrus and vanilla. It smells a little like soap or fabric softener. Wonderful!

Aveda Shampure Soy Wax Candle

The soy wax candle smells just like the Shampure shampoo. It is comprised of 25 plant essences, and makes the room smell wonderful, even when not lit. My only complaint is that the candle doesn’t burn evenly. The candle, available in a glass holder retails for $28, but the refill is less expensive at $17.

Cover Girl Tru Shine Lip Color

I was curious about the claim that the lipstick will suit 97% of skin tones. I chose one in the fair skin line called Blushberry, and I love it. The color is natural, the lipstick adds a nice sheer gloss to the lips and wears very comfortably. Airdrie said it even makes my lips bigger. It’s no miracle formula, just smoke and mirrors and choosing the right shade, I guess. It retails for $7.99 CA, but I found an in-store coupon for $1.50. Score.

Revlon Colorstay Active Light Makeup

l tried Revlon’s ColorStay Active® Light Makeup because I was looking for a light foundation. I did not like this one as much as some of the others I’ve tried lately, primarily because it didnt’ blend as well. I guess that is due to the formulation, which is “sweat proof, sun proof and rub-off proof” according to the company. Sounds like one that will carry into the summer. I’m going to report back on this one in a few weeks, after I’ve givin it a thorough test, as I wonder if it’s 16-hour long wearing formula will ultimately clog my pores. It is available in 10 shades, and sells for $17.99CA or some say it looks blotchy by the end of the day.

Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant

We’ve not found this product on the shelves in Canada yet, but have been giving it a mention because we know we’ve got some sweaty listeners, and many inquiries about deodorants and anti-perspirants. The active ingredient in Secret Clinical is aluminum zirconium tricholorhydrex gly at 20% anhydrous, apparently the highest allowable over the counter strength. Like Drysol, this product is applied at night before bed, when sweat production slows. This one sounds promising, and we will give it a full review when it becomes available here. In the meantime, go to Secret’s site to learn more about this product. (link: not martha)

Neutrogena Body Oil (Sesame)

(Approx. $10 CDN) - This is a fragrant, light bath oil that also works great as an after-bath moisturizer. Also available in unscented, but Airdrie really likes the scent and thinks it smells like Plumeria flower, one of the most popular Perfumes of Hawaii scents ($15US).

Mane 'n Tail Conditioner

(Approx. $10 CDN) - This deep blue coloured hair conditioner is thick and performed OK, however I will not buy it again. Listen to the show for a full review.

Suave Naturals Soothing Lavender Lilac Conditioner (approx $3 CDN). While prices vary from store-to-store, Airdrie has noticed that shampoo and conditioner prices, in general, have been on the rise. One product line that has maintained a low price without compromising quality and effectiveness is the Suave line. Of course this is just one blogger's opinion. Try this product, and see for yourself. The Lavender and Lilac scent is long-lasting, if that is what you are looking for. The Suave naturals line also includes other fruity-floral natural scents.

Shai Recommends

Phyto($20 for shampoo or conditioner) - Shai uses these products in her salon.
Paul Mitchell (she recommends the Tea Tree series for non-colour treated hair, especially for men)
A brush that looks like a flatiron. (Update: I found one at Shopper's Drug Mart today by Goody for $11.99, and it works OK, but not as good as the high-priced real flatiron I invested in two years ago.)

Airdrie and Kerry Anne have both been using Keri's new Nourishing Shea Butter Moisture Therapy with 5% shea butter and give it a collective "four thumbs up". Keri currently has seven different lotion formulations on the market. They are quality products at a reasonable price, and we both get all sentimental about the 80s when we smell it.

Kerry Anne's Reviews:

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lip Stain Duo is a limited edition product that should be added into EL’s repetoire permanently. One side of the tube contains a sheer stain, in Coral or Cherry. I have the Cherry, which is a true, light red. The other side of the tube contains a sheer gloss. I personally like the natural look of the stain, without the gloss. Double Wear Lipstain has a longer drying time than some of the other stains I’ve used, so you’ve got more time for blending (and fixing mistakes). It can also be layered for a more dramatic look, and used on cheeks for a flushed look. It has a slightly fruity scent, and a sweet sugar-like taste. Retails for $25-$30.
Avon's Extreme Volume Flexicoat mascara isn’t a bad mascara, it just doesn’t live up to it’s “extreme” promise. For a mascara that touts itself as a voluminzer, I was disappointed in it, as my lashes did not look significantly thicker, nor were they much longer. On the plus side, Extreme Volume doesn’t clump or smudge. It’s just a very standard formulation, with nothing extreme about it. I paid only $2.99 for it.

Airdrie's Reviews:

Sally Hansen French Manicure White Tip pen (about $5): Available in a French Manicure Kit, or now sold separately, this "innovative" pen is not as cool as it looks on the shelf. I found it a little too runny, and did not really go on easier than a normal white nail polish with brush. Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of the whole French Manicure style. It only really looks good when professionally done, and even then it's easy to cross the line and end-up with Porn Star Nails. Don't buy this product. If you really want, I'll mail mine to you for free. ( I'll even throw-in a free gently-used Revlon Nose Pore Cleaner. Just kidding. We are saving all our bad products for a nasty worst of the worst show.)
Nivea Visage "Aqua Sensation" Anti-Shadow Eye Creme (14g, $11 CDN). I purchased this eye creme to review for the show. The price was right (I got it on sale for about $8), and I was not disappointed. It goes on almost like a gel, and absorbs quickly. I did not notice any magical anti-shadow side show, but that's what foundation is for anyway. A fun product, but more of a treat than a necessity.

Media Check:

In lieu of a Reality Check, Airdrie reads some of the highlights featured in this month's Lou Lou magazine. The way she goes on-and-on about how much she loves this magazine might make you think they gave us a subscription for free, but, alas, no. She just paid $4.25 for it like other Canadian women.
