Episode #5 - All About Facial Hair

Pluck it. Tweeze it. Bleach it. Or leave it.

Please take our brand spanking new listener survey. You could win an iPod nano (and so could we if you do!).

This week on episode 5 of Lip Gloss and Laptops (43-minute MP3 file, about 24.5 MB) Airdrie and Kerry Anne brought female facial hair out of the closet and into your ears, so to speak. Millions of women have facial hair, so if it drives you crazy, you're not alone.

Air went into some of the reasons for excess facial hair, and ways of removing it.

Lastly, there is a product called Vaniqa, that can be used in conjunction with other hair removal methods. Available by prescription only, it doesn't remove facial hair entirely, but does slow down its growth.

Eyebrows

  • A magnifying mirror is a great tool to see all those stray eyebrow hairs. Warning, seeing your pores that close up may be slightly frightening.
  • You don't need to fill in your eyebrows with an expensive brow filler. A cheap matte brown eyeshadow in an appropriate shade will do just fine.
  • Powder brow fillers generally look more natural than the brow pencils.
  • Pluck slowly, and one hair at a time, or you may go overboard. The best eyebrow is a natural looking eyebrow.

Eyebrow Product Recommendations

slanttweezer

Kerry Anne loves the tweezers made by Tweezerman. They come in a variety of models and range in price from about $5.00 to $35.00. Buying a pair of Tweezermans may seem expensive, but they truly are a long-term investment. The company provides free lifetime sharpening and spring repair. Like the site says, they're the "choice of make-up artists and beauty professionals for over 25 years".

NYC Browser

Kerry Anne's drugstore pick is New York Color's Browser ($3.99US, $4.50CA). NYC's product is dirt cheap and still does a good job. It consists of a clear wax to groom brows, a soft powder to colour them, a small stiff brush for application, and a half-decent pair of tweezers. It's drawback is that it is only available in three colours, Blonde, Brunette, and Smoke. It is a great product for someone who already has a good amount of eyebrow hair and simply wants to define and set their brows, or fill a sparse area.

Smashbox Browtech

The luxury brand pick for this week is the Smashbox Brow Tech. It is quite pricey ($30CA, $22US), not including the brush they recommend, Angle Brow Brush #12 ($19US). One side of the product is a clear pomade, and the other contains a natural looking powder. The salesgirl helped Kerry Anne try on the blonde colour, and it looked natural, yet more "put-together". Apply lightly for a subtle look, or with a heavier hand for a darker tone and more drama. Brow Tech comes in six shades, including grey and auburn, or you can purchase the wax alone ($22CA, $18US). For someone who has very sparse eyebrow hair, and is looking for a lot of coverage, they might benefit from one of the department store brands like this. Test the product at the counter before you buy it, most salespeople are more than willing to give you a lesson in application. When spending this much on a cosmetic, ensure that it works for you before you hand your money over.

Resources

Some useful ones we found this week are:

  • eyebrowz.com - information about face shape, tools, techniques, celebrity eyebrow stencils and even "eyebrow wigs" for women dealing with facial hair loss
  • Anastasia Soare - celebrity eyebrow guru
  • Why Do We Have Eyebrows? - howstuffworks gives you the answer

Reality Check

We discussed the growing discomfort with body hair in North American society. This applies to men as well as women, as more men are heading down the the local spa for a good waxing.

Next week: the Makeup Challenge, and maybe an interview with Ponzi. Hear the 30-second promo (MP3 file) for episode 6, coming April 5, 2006!

Perfumes That Smell Like Our Favourite Products

Sea Salt Perfume

On episode #4, in addition to blush, we discussed perfume versions of products we love. If you've been tuning in, you'll know that the H2O Plus Sea Salt Skin Smoother ($26US for 24 fl oz\680 g) is like crack to Airdrie. She is now trying to push this crack on Kerry Anne. Airdrie was thrilled to find that they now carry a Sea Salt Eau de Toilette ($25US for 1.6 fl oz\47 ml) with the same scent, and is looking forward to Mother's Day. The H2O site says this fragrance is an "aromatic blend of wild bergamot nectar, succulent mandarin blossom, exotic black tea leaves and sensual angel wing orchid". Sea Salt indeed.

Aveda Pure-Fume

Kerry Anne, and many other women, adore the scent of Aveda's Shampure Shampoo. While wandering through the Aveda salon recently, she found that they carry both a candle in the Shampure scent, and a perfume! Aveda Pure-Fume Absolute Water Nature #6-Restoring is mixed for you right in the store, according to how strong you like your fragrance to be. The fragrance is a combination of ylang-ylang, citrus and coriander, and will run you $24CA or $20US for .5 oz/15 ml.

New hairy promo for Episode #5, and some cool changes

If you listened to Episode #4 of the podcast right through to the end, you heard the big hairy beat song at the end, promoting next week's show. Now you can get that promo on its own to play on your own podcast (or to put on repeat on your iPod, if you're so inclined). It's a 48-second MP3 file.

You might also have noticed some other interesting things happening around the edges of the Lip Gloss and Laptops home page and blog pages. I'll let Kerry Anne and Airdrie explain things there, but I will point out three particularly notable items:

  1. There's a survey you can fill out (please do!), which will help profile the podcast's audience better, and maybe help us get some sponsorship down the line. If you fill out the survey and leave your email address (which won't get shared with anyone), you could win an iPod nano. (And if you do, and note that you got there from Lip Gloss and Laptops, we win one too!)
  2. Lip Gloss and Laptops has a discussion forum now. You can continue to leave comments here on the blog, of course, but if you prefer a forum, it's there now.
  3. Please vote for the podcast and leave comments in a few places, now that the podcast is nearly a month old. Your options include:You can also find Lip Gloss and Laptops at:

Oh, and if you click around the new banners and stuff at lipglossandlaptops.com, you'll probably figure out what else is going on.

Episode #4 - cheeks

Episode 4 is now available for download (41 min 58 sec MP3 file, about 24 MB), and as usual, we have a promo for next week (and this week it's a song—48 sec MP3 file, about 1 MB).

There is a ton of blush out there, and luckily, the majority of it is pretty decent. We decided to go with only two recommendations for this week's episode, as we know its an area we're sure to revisit.

MAC Blush

Kerry Anne went with MAC as her department store pick. With over 50 shades of Powder Blush (6g/0.21oz $21CA,$17.50US) to choose from, both matte and shimmery, there is a shade (or two, or three) for every skin tone. It lasts a long time in the container and the colour shows up beautifully on the face. If you are unsure about choosing the right blush for your skin tone, ask one of the make-up artists there to help you out.

The Blushcreme (6g/0.21oz $21CA,$17.50US) comes in 14 shades, and is quite deeply pigmented so use it sparingly. A special line, Ultracheek, is available for a limited time and adds both colour and sheen to your cheeks.

Rimmel Blush

The drugstore brand of the week is Rimmel Blush (5g/0.17 oz $4.99CA,$2.69US) It's cheap, good quality and they have some nice shades. I think Rimmel, owned by Coty, could improve the packaging of the blush, which is very compact and flat. Because it is so flat, you get powder falling off the sides when you swish your brush around. Also, the lid easily falls off when it's getting tossed around in the bottom of your purse.

To save yourself the trouble of having to clean everything in your purse, either put it in a plastic ziploc bag or in a small makeup bag. For the price, I don't expect perfection and these packaging blunders, while frustrating, are forgiven. The colour does go on nicely, and shows up very well. The Soft Cream Blush (4g/0.14oz $4.99CA,$2.69US) is not nearly as pigmented as the MAC Blushcreme, but the cream to powder formula does give the face good colour with a nice sheen. And right now, it's all about the dewy look for the cheekbone area.

KA's pet peeve is when companies package their product with a teeny-tiny brush, and a thin strip of product. It could be good stuff, but I'll never know because I won't buy it. How hard it is to turn that rectangle of blush into a user-friendly square or circle of colour?

Air went for a Mystic Tan™ at Body Rays Tanning Salon in trendy Kitsilano. The Mystic Tan is great for fair-skinned people who are prone to burning, as it is UV free. Five days later, and the tan is still going strong. Definitely worth the $30. She'll be getting one before her trip to Hawaii in August. Read more about the Mystic Tan here. Mystic Tanning booths are located nation-wide and spray a self-tanner, not a bronzer.

Northern Beauty: Part One

by Melanie in Northern BC

I looked at products which are easily available in drugstores, grocery stores and low end department stores. In most cases these are the only places available for northern women to shop.

Up here, in the north, winters are usually cold, the air is dry and the sun, which shines a lot, is intensified by its reflection off the snow.

The combination of extreme cold, dry air and all that sunlight can leave you skin feeling abused and rough. Since your face is the only part of you exposed to the elements when outside. I will first talk about products you can use on your face.

These days most products for the face have sunscreen in them.

The ones I like are Healthy Skin by Neutrogena and Essential Nutrients by Dove.

Both are available as lotions and creams, use the cream is you have drier skin. Both have SPF 15 and are recommended by Dermatologists. Both contain a variety of vitamins, in addition the Dove product contains zinc and green teas extracts.

The Neutrogena product contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) which may cause irritation for some people. but the folks at Nuetrogena assure you any irritation is normal and will soon disappear. When I put this product on my face I feel a pleasant tingling sensation which lasts a few seconds. My daughter , on the other hand, found it too irritating.

AHA's stimulate cell growth by sloughing off the dead top layer of cells allowing new cells to be exposed thus improving the colour and texture of your skin.

The dove products contain no AHA's and are better if you have more sensitive skin like my daughter.

  • Neutrogena lotion Cost = 14.99 for 70ml
  • Neutrogena also makes another loton with SPF 30, cost 18.99 for 50 mls
  • They also make a cream for those with drier skin cost 17.99 50mls
  • The Cost of the Dove Products was = 11.99 for both the cream and the lotion 50 mls

Reality Check

After seeing silicone butt enhancers available for sale at the mall, we wondered how the media can deem a certain body part or body type "fashionable". Lately, it's been the booty that's all the rage. From the buxom sweater girls of the 1950s, to the waiflike "heroin-chic" bodies that girls starved for in the 1990s, advertising and media dictate what the "in" look is. Bad news for the majority of the female population who can't live up to these unrealistic standards, and whose body image may suffer because of it.

You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen. But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soul's own doing. - Marie Stopes

Podcasting papers

While we weren't mentioned this week as we were last time, the Vancouver Sun continued its three-part weekend series on podcasting in an interview with prominent local blogger Darren Barefoot, who has changed his tune a bit about podcasting in the past year—a year ago, he wrote that he was "not smoking the podcasting dope." Now he's the authority in the local paper about it.

Tomorrow, Lip Gloss and Laptops should get a small mention in Metro, one of several local free daily papers. Make sure you pick up a copy!

UPDATE: The paper is now out for you to take a look at (click for larger versions):

New cheeky promo for episode #4

Now that episode #3, the first of The Perfume Chronicles, is out, there's a promo for next week's show, Cheeks (1-minute MP3 file). If you have a podcast, feel free to play it. The show comes out March 22, 2006.

Episode #3: The Perfume Chronicles

Lip Gloss and Laptops Episode 3 is now ready for download (31 MB MP3 file, just about 55 minutes). This week we visited The Perfume Shoppe at Sinclair Centre in Downtown Vancouver (Canada, eh?). Visit their store for a free consultation to find your signature scent, or visit their website to enroll in their "samples program". They ship world-wide, and are extremely friendly. Finding a signature scent has never been so much fun!

When looking for a scent you like, try it on and wear it before you splurge. Some scents are expensive, and they smell different on the sample cards at the department store than they do on your skin. Every woman has her own unique body chemistry, which will make a scent develop on her in a different way than it might develop on her friend.

In our travels this week, we smelled many, many perfumes. Kerry Anne's favourites were Montale Aoud Ambre and Agent Provocateur. Airdrie and Kerry Anne both liked Serge Lutens Miel de Bois. At first it just smells richly of honey and beeswax candles, but then it develops and there is so much more to it. Use it sparingly.

Some women, like Scentzilla and Airdrie, can't be limited to one scent. They prefer to have a "scent wardrobe", and own several scents which they wear depending on their mood or the occasion.

The complex relationship between scent, emotion, and memory can be traced-back to the primitive vertebrate "rhinencephalon" or "smell brain". Read more in the book The Wisdom of the Body by surgeon and renowned author Sherwin B. Nuland.

Regarding the debate that Airdrie and Kerry Anne have during this episode, apparently it is possible to synthesize spider silk from a goat. Details at this link: How stuff works.
KA would still like to go on the record saying "yeah, yeah, whatever".

Keeping It Real... An Ad for Heaven Sent from October 1972 Seventeen Magazine

Advertisers are trying to sell you something, whether it's innocence or irresistability or a more glamorous lifestyle. Buy a scent because you love it, not because it is associated with celebrity or promises to make you sexy and mysterious. It's easy to buy into the hype. Be a wise consumer.

Not everyone will love your signature scent as much as you do. There is also a substantial part of the population with scent sensitivities and allergies. Don't envelope yourself in so much perfume that you become a public nuisance.

This week's promos are for Manic Mommies, Bedtime Stories My Kids Love, Buckeye Drive Time, the Blarmcast, and GROW. Listener mail from Katie at scentzilla.com and Melanie from Caffinara, among others. Also check out our new promo for Episode 4, coming March 22.

For me, beauty is the celebration of uniqueness, not conformity.

Episode #2 is ready - download now

If you subscribe to our podcast, you may have Episode 2 of Lip Gloss and Laptops (Conversations About Mascara) on your computer or iPod already. If not, go to the page now or download the MP3 file (43 minutes, about 24 MB in size). We also have a new 55-second promo for our upcoming March 15 episode, which will begin our ongoing series The Perfume Chronicles.

Read our previous blog post for notes about the mascaras we tried and liked (or didn't like). Please leave a comment about the show, and make suggestions about perfumes we should cover next week. Thanks for listening!

Episode #2 Conversations About Mascara

In our second podcast (now available), we focused mainly on drugstore brands, proving that beautiful lashes need not come with a high price tag. Choosing a great mascara is simply a matter of finding a formulation you love that gives you the effect you desire. Kerry Anne prefers mascaras that add volume, while Air wants length and curl.

Airdrie's Picks

lashout

L'Oreal Lash Out - Waterproof and Regular formulas ($8.99CAD, $6.99USD). L'Oreal is known for their great mascaras, and these don't disappoint. They lengthen and last. The waterproof works great in the pool and also for sad days.

lashexact

CoverGirl LashExact ($7.99CAD, $6.99USD) Even smart shoppers can succumb to a good marketing campaign. Air was drawn to this one because Queen Latifah is in the advertisements. Oh, and it had a pretty pink wand with "Patent-Pending Moldtrusion Brush Technology". Luckily, it's a keeper. Look for it on sale at drugstores this week as the next hottest thing has no doubt come on the market to replace this product's big splashy display space from last week.

More Than

Estee Lauder More Than Mascara in "More Green"($25 CAD, $21 USD) Airdrie swears by Estee Lauder mascara, and probably owns every one that's come out in the last five years. She likes the generous size, and well engineered wands. This one is a limited edition "More Green" version from the More Than Mascara line.

Kerry Anne's Picks

Voluminous

L'Oreal Voluminous ($8.99CAD, $6.99USD) This is a great one when KA wants to have a thick wall of lashes. So far, it's the best deal she has found for a voluminizing mascara. It really makes the eyes stand out and look pretty, and isn't that the point? The only drawback is that it takes some work to get it all off, which is precisely the last thing she wants to do at the end of the night.

tripmasc

CoverGirl Triple Mascara ($6.99CAD, $5.49USD) This is a wonderful bargain mascara that performs like a more expensive one. It lives up to its name and builds length, volume, and curl with no smearing or clumps. It's a great daytime mascara that still provides some glam.

Estee Lauder More Than Mascara in "More Blue" ($25CAD, $21 USD) As with the green, black is really the predominant colour in this mascara. It has a slight blue tint, but nothing obnoxious. KA thought it lengthened and defined wonderfully, and is worth the indulgence. Apparently it moisturizes too, in case "dry lash" is something that is a concern for you.

We'd Pass On These

Kerry Anne was less than thrilled with Almay One Coat Triple Effect Nourishing Mascara ($7.99CAD, $5.99USD). While the quality of the mascara itself was good, it didn't give the lashes any of the volume it claimed to with just one coat.

Airdrie had a shockingly bad experience with L'Oreal's Volume Shocking Mascara. ($10.95-$12.95). This is a two step mascara which contains an initial lash primer to give the lashes some oomph, and a dark mascara to finish them off. The problem was the goopy quality of the mascara formulation, and the difficulty in using the applicator "comb". She injured her eye twice using this product, and her coordination skills have never been called into question before. The packaging is pretty rad, but not worth risking an eye for. Opt for one of the other L'Oreal mascaras instead.

Other Items

We mentioned some of our listener's favourite brands. We received an email from a listener who we've inspired to get back into using cosmetics again, after 12 years of going without. We discussed that wearing makeup is a personal choice, and that many women choose simply not to wear it and feel great about themselves.

Reality Check

The lashes you see in magazines are enhanced by false eyelashes, lighting, airbrushing and digital enhancement, and are not the final result that you will get from purchasing that product.

Remember that a sense of humour, a good heart and an open mind will make you more attractive than any mascara will.

New promo for episode 2 (which arrives March 8)

The first episode of Lip Gloss and Laptops for March 1 is now out, so it’s time for a promo for next week’s episode #2, which will feature mascara, and will arrive on March 8, 2006:

Please play it on your show if you have a podcast. Thanks!

Episode #1 Top Lip Gloss Picks

If you subscribe to our podcast, you may already have our first episode to listen to. If not, go to the page now or download the MP3 file (21:30 minutes, 14.8 MB in size). We also have a new 45-second promo for our next show, which will come out March 8 and focus on mascara.

Following up on the lip glosses we discussed, after scouring through beauty magazines, websites and reader reviews our recommended picks are:

Tinted Lipglass

Tinted Lipglass by MAC (CA$16.50 US$14.00, .17oz) - With over 30 shades to choose from, this gloss can either be worn over lipstick, or by itself. Its staying power can be attributed to its thick and slightly sticky texture. Tinted Lipglass has a wand applicator and is only one of seven different types of Lipglass MAC has on the market. The Lip Gelee is nice too.

Juicy Tubes

Juicy Tubes by Lancome ($16.50USD/$20.00CAD, 0.5oz) - Kerry Anne finally jumped on the bandwagon and purchased the much touted Juicy Tube. Though it's a bit pricey, it has quite a nice texture and lasts well. Again, over 30 shades to choose from. They also have a new line, called Juicy Tubes Pop, that give your lips a lovely shine and a cooling sensation.

Rimmel_Volume_Boost_Liquid_Lipcolor

Volume Boost Liquid by Rimmel of London (about $6, .23 Floz.) - Though technically classified as a lipstick by Rimmel, we think it's more of a gloss. With ten shades, from natural to vampy, it sure made our lips shiny, though did nothing to pump up the volume. It gave our lips a nice minty tingle and a mild taste. For our money, this is a good one. If only Kate Moss chose her boyfriends as wisely as she chooses her lipcolour.

Nothing too surprising here. The Lipglass and Juicy Tubes consistently make various "Best of" lists, and for good reason. They are quality products. Whether it's $3 or $30, find what works for you.

Did you know that the average woman eats 6 pounds of lipstick during her lifetime?

Next week...mascara!
