Episode #49 - Nails, Creams, and Valentine's Day

Welcome to our Valentine's Day show. Listen at the podcast page or download the MP3 file (58 minutes). Or subscribe and get a new episode whenever it's ready, why don't you?

Airdrie's Reviews

Airdrie was disappointed in December when her MAC Nail Lacquer in Vintage Vamp ($12CDN) chipped the very same day she applied it. Although MAC pigments are more exciting than your average drugstore colours, the chipping requires frequent touch-ups. If a grungy chipped look is what you are going for, try the MAC. If you hate chips, carry the bottle with you on trips. I do not recommend the MAC nail polish and will not buy it again.

The Sally Hansen 10-day No-Chip Nailpolish recieves a "two-thumbs-up" review from Airdrie. The formulation feels more "gummy", less brittle than the MAC. It did not chip at all on the index fingers over a 48 hour period-- amazing! Airdrie was pleased with the results, although she did not wear it for a full 10-day test. ($5.99CDN). She will buy it again.

Keep nail-polish no longer than two years.

Kerry Anne's Reviews

breathhappinessMy dry hands are still driving me nuts, and I keep forgetting to bring moisturizer to work. The upside of this is that I've discovered a co-worker's non-greasy hand cream from Bath & Body Works' Breathe Line. The Happiness Deep Moisture Healing Hand Cream contains shea butter, pro-vitamin B5, and a scents of citrus and water mint. It rocks fairly hard, and costs $12.50 for 3.3 oz/100 ml. The Breathe line also offers body creams, scrubs, tanning creams, fragrance mists and more, in five other fragrances.

Bath & Body Works is jumping on the pomegranate bandwagon with a Midnight Pomegranate Collection. Kinky.

vanillagrapefruitNew, on Sephora's site is Lavanila's Vanilla Grapefruit, which I haven't tried, but intrigues me nevertheless. It contains notes of Grapefruit, Bergamot, Lime, Patchouli, Heliotrope, and Madagascar Vanilla. With "100 percent active botanicals", antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, Lavanila fragrances claim to be "good for you". Not so sure about how much a positive impact it would have my health, but I'll give it a go next time I hit Sephora. $56US for 1.7 oz.

Hi Kerry Ann and Airdrie,

Great podcast, but just a point of clarification: Bath and Bodyworks DOES NOT deliver internationally (no, not even to Canada)! :( So if we want the stuff, heading down to the store is probably the best we can do.

Oh! And I forgot to say this: you can find the Tom Ford perfume at Holts in Toronto, so it's surprising that the Vancouver one doesn't have one! You might just ask them when it's coming in...

Cheers!

OFF TOPIC -- this is in reference to a book you mentioned a couple of episodes ago -- Bitten, by Kelley Armstrong. IT WAS GREAT! Thanks for the tip!

i don't buy many MAC products because, although, their colors are usually amazing, I find their counter folks to be just too.... noisy? like visually and trying to be tooooo hip plus i've tried the lipglass and i find it should be called hair glue - seems like the products look great, but i haven't found anything that feels good... that said - i do like the look of the "barbie loves mac" - some of the colors but MAJOR points for using the old school barbie logo/profile - that's just cool!

enjoyed the show as usual - sending out some good thoughts and aura fluffing to you both and airdrie in partic (and derek too) - hang in there, glad you are finding some support in some of your listners... think your anniversary show idea is a great one - but do take your time, especially given all that is going on. not that i am positive you both have your priorities in great order, but, honestly, we'll all wait if we have/need too!!!

i might try that sally hansen nail polish, but honestly, to go back to an earlier show, i am still doing the gel nails (very short overlay with an american manicure, so it just looks like regular nails) and there ain't no polish i've ever found that looks as nice and smooth on "natural"nails as it does on the gel. not that everyone should do that, but it makes a huge difference and i was wandering aro9und going how come my hands look like $hit and others' dont? thats why...

ok, well happy year of the pig! i'm having a chinese new year party tonite (i have confused the entire population of norfolk with this theme) but in any event:

GUNG HAY FAT CHOY!

oh... and i lost my treo yesterday.... groan

lisa aka sambycat- ps and if you or derek do have any anesthesia related questions or just anything - drop me a line!! :)

I'll second lisa/sambycat's comments about the 50th show idea - both its ingenuity and that we don't mind waiting if we have to. It got me to thinking about what my perfect beauty day would be. Maybe if I come up with something, I'll post it the comments for the anniversary show.

Sending out good thoughts for everyone. Been reading your personal blogs for a while too and have been enjoying that too.

I briefly looked for the Sally Hansen's nail polish in the store yesterday but didn't see that particular one. However, the store I was in isn't usually very quick to get new products. But, I'm going for a spa appointment on Monday and might just get a mani/pedi while I'm there. I'm terrible at upkeep though, so as much as I'd love to get the beautiful look of gel nails, I know it wouldn't last long for me.

Lisa - I'm officially jealous of your Treo ownership - currently saving my pennies to upgrade my sad little Zire 21.

Ladies,

The Midnight Pomegranate is sickly sweet, and the fragrance really sticks with you, so use the tester first!

Regarding Bag Balm, mentioned in the last podcast: it's great stuff, but be advised that it has a heavy, Vaseline-like consistency and takes a good 5-10 minutes to soak in. Once it does, it works wonderfully on dry hands and lips, and costs about US $7.00.

I would also second (third?) the comment both about looking forward to the 50th show, but also about our ability to wait for it as long as need be. The last thing you need, Airdre, is to be feeling pressure to put out the podcast. The one thing I have learned from having a spouse dealing with cancer (lymphoma) is that one must deal with life on a day-to-day basis and to stick with the immediate priorities of being strong for your husband and children and doing your day job. It's important not to push yourself just because we listeners are chomping at the bit for your great product tips, which we are, of course!
