Episode #42 - Straight Outta Lynnwood
Go get it! It's the 42nd episode of Lip Gloss and Laptops over on the shownotes page or in a direct MP3 download (just over 30 minutes). Photo credit: Kris Krug
We attended a wedding in Seattle this weekend, and recorded this episode of our podcast on the road. Just some quick links this week, as we are spent from travelling, holiday partying, Christmas shopping and all the other activities which make December a whirlwind (and often stressful!) month.
MAC Lady Bug Lipstick is an orange-based red lustre. It glides on like a dream, smells nice and suits both of our fair-skinned complexions, though it would be suitable for a range of skin tones. We give it two thumbs up. $16.50CAD/$14USD
Go get yourself some silicone bust enhancing inserts. No one has to know but you. Unless you tell everyone like we just did. There's lots of different brands out there and they'll run you anywhere from $25 to $50. Much cheaper than an augmentation.
Benefit's EyeBright is a pink undereye pencil that camouflages dark shadows in the inner eyes. I swear I see Carmindy of What Not to Wear use it on a regular basis on the show. It's $18USD, which is steep for a pencil, but I think I'm going to eventually break down and buy this one.
Smashbox PhotoFinish Foundation Primer is a silicone makeup primer that preps your skin for foundation by creating a smooth, flawless finish. I did like how it made my skin look, but have since broken out and wonder if the combination of PhotoFinish and the foundation clogged my pores. It retails at Sephora for $36USD. I've seen small bottles of it at the local Shopper's Drug Mart (Canada) for $20CAD.
Benefit Lemon-Aid for eyes is a fun product, but by no means essential. I tried this yellow "correcting cream" before I got ready for the wedding, and it prepped my eyelids nicely for shadow and liner, but I wouldn't spend $18USD on it.
Airdrie attained a sexy and confident look with false eyelashes by Sugar ($7.50USD at Sephora). These lashes applied easily, lasted all night, and the glue did not irritate at all. Airdrie wore the half-lashes, but may go for the full-lashes next time. This product rocks! And at this price all girls should try them. Be sure to have a black gel or pencil eyeliner to help blend the false-lash to your eyeline.
Kerry Anne tried Carthusia perfumes in Fiori di Capri and Ligea La Sirena. Carthusia is an Italian perfumery that has been creating fragrances since 1681. Available at select Nordstroms, Barneys New York and their website.
At Nordstrom, Airdrie stumbled-upon a scent called "Miss Me" by Stella Cadente. The fragrance is described as an oriental balm, structured around a sphere—instead of an olfactory pyramid—of Tolu, Peruvian and Siamese benzoin balms. Don't ask me to translate that for you, I just copied off the great perfume blog Now Smell This. All I can say is I like it! It is powdery. Available only at Nordstrom. I want it. I need it. I have to have it.

Max Factor's cult classic beauty product Pan-Stik is celebrating it's 60th Anniversary, and we are sharing all the excitement with you. Airdrie wore it to the wedding, and the results were perfect for a formal night-out. Listen to this show for our morning-after review and details on how to win your own Max Factor Pan-stik. We will talk more about the history of the Pan-Stik in our next show, as well we will have some tips on using this product from Pat McGrath.

I don't believe makeup and the right hairstyle alone can make a woman beautiful. The most radiant woman in the room is the one full of life and experience. - Sharon Stone

Stella Cadente... neat name. (Falling star?)
Attempting to go to beautybash.com turns up one of those pages of ad links that tend to appear for nonexistent domains. Has it gone into well-deserved oblivion, or am I misremembering the URL?
Love your avatar!! And no, it has not disappeared (I wish). It is located at dot net.
I think it's horrible that at the same time your are promoting beauty boost, you are bashing the mall freaks, by staring and saying they are so freakish that they prevent you from paying attention to the podcast you are recording.
Is that really that much worse than what the people at beauty bash are doing?
Or is it ok, because the mall freaks don't know you are talking about them?
Busted. I apologize if you were offended by that. The truth is, I do like people-watching, and was quite distracted at times while we were recording because there were so many interesting looking people in that mall, and we used the blanket term of "mall freaks" to describe them. I wasn't intentionally bashing anyone, and certainly not doing it to be a bully. It was in poor taste to make the comment to Air about the man at "three of clock" when I did. And no, it isn't ok to have a laugh at someone's expense when they aren't around to witness it. Unfortunately, we've all done it, we've all been on the receiving end, and frankly, it does suck. Thanks for keeping it real, Sarah.
True dat, double true, Kerry Anne. I echo your comment, and apologize if I offended anyone.
I wonder how many people were looking at the two of us talking into an ipod video at the food court and thinking, "wtf?"
havent listened yet, but the people watching thing makes me think back a couple of episodes when kerry anne was talking about going to a dance because you and your hubby like to watch people dance, etc... i am the same way - me and a good gf from long ago would always find ourselves focusing on a different looking group or something and thinking "..but they are having fun though..."... haha! well, i know people look at me all the time and i hope after they think "wtf??!!" they then think - "but she's having fun though!!"

Hi Kerry Anne and Airdrie,
thanks so much for the shout out! I really appreciate it! And yes, the blog is Canadian beauty so I want to make sure that the products are available in Canada and I'll write about products that suit a variety of skintones as well. Other than that, that podcast was different but kind of cool.
Cheers!
Yay, listening to Episode #42 now!
Sorry you couldn't find the Wickedly Hot Chocolate, it's hard to track down - Yes, Bath and Body Works is totally crazy mobbed. It's much worse than the semi-annual sales, but the sales are awesome. The next one's gonna be from 12/27/06 to 1/21/07. A tip, next time you're in The States - They often have a working sink inside the store so you can test out products, and wash your hands. C.O. Bigelow stores have the same sink set-up. :) Love that. It's a great way to test out soaps and scrubs.
I have a tip to drop (gentle) hints for Christmas! OK, I know, 'tis the season for giving. But, I used Amazon.com's wishlist to put my favorite Bath n' Body items I was craving into one list (yes, my bf asked for the list, I wasn't being a greedy girl). I was able to give my guy an idea of what kinds of things I was looking at - plus, I think it helps that a lot of the items have pictures. My guy had been asking what I wanted, and I realized that sometimes having a picture of the item really helps the guy out. It also helps that Amazon.com has links to Sephora, The Body Shop, Philosophy, and other beauty-based stores. I think it also helps guys shop for beauty-ish stuff online - less confusing to try to go up to the makeup and perfume counters, I think.
Keep up the good work, ladies! Have a great day! Janice B. from Chicago!
Awww YEAH! I'm excited, really really really really really excited to hear about Beauty Boost! Can't wait for it to evolve...
Okay, so I'm horribly tardy with this post. I've been a listener ever since I bought my iPod over the summer and I'm catching up on past casts and readings. You guys are so fun to listen to! I've cracked up unexpectedly so many times that I had to give up beverages to listen. You asked for future topic ideas and I have some for you and then I have just one question. Okay, I'm a cosmetic lover so you could review dozens of cosmetic products in the episodes and I'd never get bored. That being said, I am really interested in the NARS line of products but they are pricey and I don't live conveniently to a distributor so if you could review some of their cream and powder shadows and their blush I would be skippy happy! I have the monoi de tahiti bronzing oil and all I can say is where can I buy the keg sized bottle. I love it if you didn't get that last joke. Your Benefit product reviews are great and I love the perfume reviews. I would also be interested in hearing about your experience (if any) with home hair removal products like waxes and depilatory creams. I've tried the Nads but I don't really care for it. At any rate, the topics you cover are always interesting and your comments are hilarious. I admire that you guys aren't afraid to talk about ANYTHING, faint of heart beware!
Okay, so here is my question : in a past pod cast you did a Creme De La Mer vs. Nivea experiment. I loved it and now I want to purchase the Nivea product that won the boxing match. Which Nivea product is it? I believe it's the creme but I wanted to ask you guys before I bought.
Thank you thank you thank you is all I can say. Keep up the good work!
Debbie
PS--that awful Litrell woman who blasted you should be sent to jail for a few days and her website should be erased in my opinion!
I for one, was not offended about the "mall freaks" comments. It's one thing to be catty at times. I don't want to live in a world where we become too PC, where we aren't free to express ourselves, sometimes "not so nicely", sometime observationally, especially amongst friends and yes, unbeknownst to the person you're discussing. Honestly, I expect to be the topic of conversation at times, it's OK.
It is another thing, however, to take a person's photo, criticize each "flaw" while using racial slurs, being completely derogatory and demeaning. Beauty Bash is a completely different monster, IMO.
I appreciate the sensitivity of A and K though, addressing anyone who might have taken offense.
