Episode #36 - Concealer, Collagen and Death Cab for Cutie
This week we talk about concealers, begin our test of Dermafirm skin firming cream, and talk about a strange plastic surgery fad. Check out our shownotes and online player for the episode, or download the MP3 file (about 45 minutes).
Kerry Anne's Reviews
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind gets great reviews online. Many women claim that it covers their undereye circles completely. I, on the other hand, do not like this concealer at all. I find it very thick, and it enhances fine lines around my eyes. The colour selection is limited, with only four shades in Canada and five available in the US, and it blends poorly. In my case, there was no age rewinding happening, only age enhancing, as it did not brighten my eyes, nor did it soften any of the lines around them as claimed.
On the plus side, it comes in a squeeze tube which is more hygienic than a concealer stick or compact, and it suited Airdrie so well that I gave the product to her. It is hypo-allergenic, which always a plus when using products around the eye area. And again, many wonderful reviews at MUA.
MAC Select Cover-Up is a good concealer, and on my complexion, was much more blendable than the Maybelline product. It works very nicely on red spots and broken capillaries, providing coverage while still looking natural. Select Cover-Up is available in 11 shades and many women, including makeup artists, claim this is the best concealer they have used. I recommend it too.
($17CA or $14US for 10ml/0.33 oz)
The Lorac cosmetic line was created by makeup artist Carol Shaw, and her fragrance-free concealer, Coverup, is an industry favourite. I use this concealer for convering zits more than I use it under my eyes, as I find it rather yellow. This is great for cancelling out the redness of skin spots, but looks a bit unnatural under my eyes. The texture is very thick, though blendable, so one container of it should last long enough to make the $16US price tag worth it. It is available in seven shades, which are available for you to test at Sephora. Lorac's website is currently under construction, but the line is available at Beauty.com and QVC as well as Sephora.
Test:
Does the cosmeceutical cream DermaFirm reduce cellulite and fine lines and wrinkes? Airdrie and Kerry Anne will both be test driving this firming creme over the next 6 weeks, and we will let you have a full review at that time. At $149 US for a 2oz jar, we are thrilled that makers Smooth LLC have sent us each a jar free of charge. If you have tried it, please let us know. If not, maybe wait for our review before you buy.

We discuss a new plastic surgery fad...eyelash transplants.

Hey ladies, great show as always! I've emailed you a couple times the past week or so but I want to bug you one more time for two things:
1.) a listener a couple of shows back suggested you do a show about men's products and I want to second it; I know I could never get my boyfriend to listen, but he leans toward the metrosexual every so often (esp. when it comes to cologne and hair products) and I would eagerly pick up something I thought he might find useful.
and 2.) I was at the store the other day and remembering one of you speaking well of NYC, I picked up their Liquid Lip Shine lipgloss and it is fantastic. I got it in Sungold Pink and Cherrywood, both pretty and relatively subtle shades with a lovely shimmer. The color applies evenly and it has pretty good staying power for its price tag (~$1.99 American).. a blueberry muffin and a cup of coffee and I still had even albeit somewhat faded color and a decent amount of shine. I'll be going back to the store to stock up on more shades!
Have a good one & thanks for the show!

Hi guys! This was one of my favourite installments of your show! I use that MAC concealer on a daily basis (I save my Stila for special occassions, it's still my hands-down favourite). I've tried the Lorac one, too... it's a bit slick-feeling for my taste, but I like it around my nose and chin. One product that I really like for major cover jobs is the CoverFX foundation they sell at Shoppers Drug Mart. It's expensive, but you get a massive quantity, and you barely have to use any for it to look good. It's a bit labour intensive though, as it takes a lot of blending. Today, I bought the All-In-One Face Base from The Body Shop, because I have a holiday job there and as such, need to wear their products. I've gotta say, this stuff is amaaaazing! You can put it on with a dry brush for more of a powder, a sponge for a medium-coverage foundation, or a wet brush for a full-coverage concealer. Let me know if there are any Body Shop products you want reviews on before trying them yourself! Staff discount and all ;)
I just had a quick question for the last post-er: Jenn, or maybe you ladies could answer my question. I just recently started using Stila's concealer, and wanted to know how it compared to Mac's, as in texture wise and coverage. Are they about the same, because if they are, I might switch next time I need concealer. It is $7 cheaper in Toronto, and that $7 could go towards another cosmetics item :D
To even out the skin tone under my eyes I use Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat. It is very light weight, doesn't enhance fine lines and goes on with a handy brush applicator. My other concealer, Helena Rubenstein Magic Concealer, is better for spot coverage, but adds 10 years if used in the eye area... It doesn't last a whole day on me though, so I might check out the some alternatives. How is the staying power of the MAC and Stila concealers?
