Episode #35 - Good Times and HoJo

Listen to show #35 or download the MP3 file (about 54 minutes).

Congratulations to our winners of the Cover Girl giveaways, Michelle and Vivian. Thanks to all those who entered, and stay tuned for more free stuff!

Kerry Anne tried Avon's My Lip Miracle, a long-wearing lipstick that Avon claims is "like getting 3 lipsticks in one". Avon’s Exclusive Intuitive Technology™ will apparently give you up to 8 hours of lip colour, "miraculous moisture", and wonderful shine and colour. I ordered it, for a bargain price of $3.99CA, and felt it did not live up to the claims Avon makes. The colour only lasted a few hours on me, there was no shine, and my lips eventually felt dry and slightly gritty. The shade I received, Cafe Grande, was also different than it looked in the book, but I was aware of that risk when I ordered.

Overall, My Lip Miracle is not a bad lipstick. I like it and even recommend it, if you can find it at a reduced price from your local Avon lady. What bothers me is when companies make claims that their products do not live up to. ($8US or $9.99CA for .11oz - currently on sale in Canada)

Airdrie got a Facial:

Mmmm. A good facial should leave your skin clean, hydrated, and soft. If you are lucky, like Airdrie was at Skoah (a "facials-only" spot with spas in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Calgary), you will also leave relaxed. Listen to the show to hear about Airdrie's blackhead extraction and arm massage. Good Times.

Reality Check:

schweddyAirdrie and Kerry Anne discuss a recent comment from one of our listeners regarding sponsors and podcasting. What do our listeners think about advertisers, and which advertisers are relevant to them? We ponder these issues. We also give props to the Delicious Dish ladies, who several of our listeners think we sound like.

It's so hard to find a lipstick that will stay on for more than a few hours.... And also ending up with dry lips. Nothing compares to trying a lipstick for colour, rather than buying from a catalogue.

Thanks for another great show! Your podcast is my favourite.

I just wanted to leave a comment regarding the reality check. I'm not crazy about advertising, but a couple of sponsors would certainly not make me stop listening to the podcast. (Btw, it's nice that you read the advertisements yourselves. Is that a giggle I hear in the GoToMeeting ad:)? ) In terms of which sponsors you could be looking for, I would like to hear something related to the podcast - maybe an online cosmetics vendor? I would not say no to 10% off my next order when using the L&L promo code at lookfantastic.com for example. :) Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work!

Hiii guys! Just a comment on the advertising: it doesn't bother me any. The difference between advertising in podcasts vs. advertising on t.v., in magazines, before the movies, etc., is that it's a lot harder to ignore ads in those kinds of media. If I don't want to hear the ads in your podcast, I just skip over 'em. No biggie!

ok... nobody's flamed me - yet!! ;) again, an enjoyable show (good times) but there was a moment of cringe factor when i realized y'all we're reading my letter - which, by the way, is perfectly OK with me... I feel you raised some interesting questions about podcasting, etc...

as i am not a podcaster and thus don't have a true idea of the time and cost involved in putting out a quality podcast such as yours and i do imagine it is significant. i don't listen to tons of "non- corporate" (i.e.; non-NPR, etc..) podcasts, but the "homemade ones i listen too have little or no advertising. Links on blogs i don't think are a big deal and, in agreement with the previous comments, i certainly can "skip over segments/advertisements" i don't want to hear. my original comments to you both had more to do with the recent and continuing change in the presence of the advertisements - and not all your voice overs may be advertisement related, but thers the blubrry (sp?) thing, four sevens, go daddy, go meeting..

again, it's not my show, i was just curious and concerned about where that all is heading. i agree that advertising/sponsorship is not in and of itself bad, and that it would be difficult to have a specific cosmetic product endorsement and maintain your independence. i also know that the idea of sponsorship is not that we all suddenly fast forward over certain segments. though part of the idea of sponsorship support would be to ease your time burden if you will, something like tshirts, ?screen savers, bedazzled laptops?? or "memberships/donations" are things that come to mind that i would immediately purchase (ok, i don't need a sparkly laptop)if that is the issue.

i wouldn't quit listening, i love the show! what i don't like is the sponsorship intro within the show and the length of time the adverts take in relation to the show.

rock on gals, do a great show today and i'll be waiting till wednesday for it to arrive!!!

i wonder if you all could go trick or treating as the delicious dish ladies, perhaps with a tray of pete schweddy's balls (just add kholiday sweaters!)

The ads aren't a big deal, I get to hear you for free and sitting through the ads is certainly worth it. I love the podcast, listening right now!!

Hey Lipgloss and Laptop Ladies,

Cool show, as usual. I have been listening for a fast 6 weeks now and try to catch up on archived shows as well (I'm up to #9).
I have no problem with the advertising and actually find your voice-overs a good balance of professional-sounding but still you gals. Just keep the songs at the end - it's fun.
I have a little question that I hope you can clarify on your next show: which one is which in the picture ~ Is it Airdrie or Kerry Anne wearing the glasses? Just very curious.

I particularly enjoyed #34 episode about the parfumes. It was fun hearing the descriptions of the scents. My 10-year old daughter and I had just checked out the Hilary Duff parfum 2 days before I heard your #34 episode and I agreed completely with your take on this scent ~ I was really impressed with Hilary's perfume as well as the packaging and would wear it myself (I too am on the "sunny side" of 40).
I want to recommend an even more amazing scent at Sephora: Fresh Index's FIG APRICOT. The $72 price tag stopped me (barely) from buying this but would invite you to try it and would really like to hear how you like it. Also (and I'll stop after this), has anyone tried Sephora's "Skin Physical?" I was intrigued and would like to have my skin checked ~ just curious if anyone tried this and liked it?

Oh - and my celebrity crush would be that Jeff Probst from Survivor series (sincerely cheesey!) and John Cusack (not together).

Thanks everyone for your comments about advertising (and makeup too). Taking your emails and comments into account, we got more feedback than I expected!

To Betsey Do (in case she checks back :x), I'm pretty sure Airdrie is the one with the glasses, as in zoomed-out pictures, she has the longer hair, and Kerry Anne talks about her short hair sometimes.
