The Perfume Chronicles:
We always like to preface our perfume shows with the fact that taste in perfume is highly subjective. We're not so much trying to recommend a scent as we are just letting you know that it exists.
1. Desperate Housewives Forbidden Fruit, a new fragrance by Coty, is a fruity floriental. It debuted in September 2006 at Macy's, and is now more widely available. It's heart note is Wisteria, named after the fabled Wisteria Lane, and the bottle is cleverly molded to resemble an apple.
- top notes: crisp Rome apples, orange flowers and peaches
- heart notes: wisteria, jasmine, ylang-ylang and passion lily.
- base notes: cedarwood, sandalwood, vanilla and tonka bean
Kerry Anne and Airdrie both thought this perfume was better than we thought it would be, and it vaguely reminded us of a scent from the 90s that we can't place. Forbidden Fruit's 3.4oz eau de parfum retails for $49.50US.
2. I keep on trying Guess fragrances because one of my favourite scents of all time is the now discontinued original Guess perfume that I wore about 16 years ago. It's no surprise that I wrangled myself a sample of Guess Gold, an oriental fragrance. There's something in it that reminds me slightly of my old favourite, the amber perhaps, but does not have the same magic. Guess Gold sells for $55 but you can find it online for a discount at around $30.
- top notes: Citrus, Golden Apple, Pineapple
- middle notes: Hyacinth, Pink Pepper, Water Lily, Jasmine, Rose
- base notes: Vanilla, Musk, Sandalwood, Patchoul, Honey, Amber
3. MOR Dolce Eau de Parfums take their inspiration from sweet desserts, and are available in scents of Pistachio, Sorbet, Nougat, and Marshmallow. Not one for gourmand scents myself, I was suckered by their pretty packaging, and gave the Marshmallow a whirl. It was softer and much less sweet than I had anticipated. These perfumes are just part of broader line than include creams and dusting powders, and retail for $45 for 3.4 oz. Made in Australia.
- contains notes of: Sugar dipped rose petals, white carnation and vanilla, Pink Musk, Cotton Candy and jasmine
4. Fresh Index Tobacco Caramel was released in 1999, but I just smelled it for the first time. This unisex earthy scent is long-lasting and still manages to be light. It retails for $70-98US for 100ml/3.4 fl oz.
- top notes: tobacco flowers, mandarin, French tarragon
- heart notes: honey, Damascus rose, Chinese osmanthus
- base notes: caramel, rich amber, musk
Airdrie's reviews:
5. With Love by Hilary Duff ($25-$55 US at Sephora and wherever Elizabeth Arden is sold)
Another celebrity perfum made by Elizabeth Arden, Airdrie really likes this effervescent scent. Exotic fruits, rich woods, and earthy ambers make this perfume appropriate for all age groups, not just those kids who have grown-up wearing Stuff-by-Duff t-shirts and shoes. Contains notes of Champagne, Mangosteen Fruit, Mangosteen Blossoms, Cocobolo Wood, Amber Milk, Amber Musk, Balsam, and Incense.

"With Love" by Hilary Duff: we like the bottle!
6. Ange ou Demon by Givenchy ($82-$120 US anywhere Givenchy is sold)
Described as an oriental floral, this creamy orange scent from Givenchy is another new scent at your local perfume shoppe. Be sure to try a sample before you buy. This scent has notes of mandarin, white thyme, saffron, orchid, lily, ylang-ylang, tonka bean, vanilla, rosewood and oak wood absolute. This and other scents are more fully reviewed at Mimi Froufrou's blog "The Scented Salamander". Click it!
Reality check:
Personal Freshness, yeah that's right: Personal. Freshness. This week we read an excellent letter from one of our listeners in response to last week's show on scented feminine products.
email us: podcast {at} lipglossandlaptops {dot} com and tell us if you wear brown mascara. We are giving away some products from our friends at Cover Girl. Listen to the whole show for details.

enjoyed the show, i always do - but glad to hear someone eloquently describe concerns about the previous show's commentary on feminine (i can't spell tonite!) hygiene products... though i have an understanding of the fixation (playtex tampons were the most flashiest and grown-up smelling during my impressionable teenage years) i was surprised and i suppose dissapointed a bit by - not the yen for and influence of the culture on all of us - but by the lack of usual insightful commentary about your desire for scented feminine protection! in any event, i appreciated the commentary and discussion today, just like talkin' with my peeps...
only one other teeny tiny concern.... how many "segments" are going to get special "go-whomever.com" intros? they're seeping in now, not just at the onset or on the blog.... i'm getting a little skittish!!
keep up the strong work (and good times)
cheers!
lisa
Sorry about the ad-content. We are just trying it out for 4 weeks to see how much revenue it brings in. At that point maybe we'll talk about it in our reality check and get some more feedback from our listeners.
no worries - the shows a lot of fun and i know y'all put a lot of your own personal time/effort/money/etc.. in to it, i support you in continuing L&L - just think this last episode had even MORE content than usual. if others had a comment i'd be interested to hear in the future...
keep smelling sweet, at either end!
lisa
