Episode #21: Mixed Bag, Cookies, and Gas!

Check out show #21 at the podcast page, or download the MP3 file (55 minutes long).

Airdrie's Picks:

This week Airdrie talks about Revlon's Jean Nate line. She purchased the Original After Bath Splash Mist ($10.99 8 Fl oz/ 236ml) and Silkening Body Powder ($9.99 6 oz/170g) at the QFC in Bellevue, Washington, on her trip to Seattle. This classic product is no longer available in Canada, at least not in our neck of the woods, and the scent is a real blast from the past. Most of our mother's had a bottle of Jean Nate in the house when we were kids.

Fragrance Description:
Jean Nate By Revlon Was Introduced In 1935. This Timeless Classic Refined Scent Is Sweet And Spicy. Never Overpowering, This Feminine Scent Possesses A Blend Of Spice And Florals. Jean Nate Is Alluring And Perfect For Evening Wear.
(description via FragranceX.com)

The scent is also available to us Canadians as a cologne spray, shower gel, and body lotion. All these products are available online, just Google "Jean Nate", point, click, and let your credit card do the rest. You Americans can find this anywhere, I think (lucky!).

Kerry Anne's Picks:

Too Faced Intensive Plumping Lip Mask

toofaced

Another product from the Too Faced "Lip Injection" line that claims to "plump your pucker for any situation or special occasion". You spread the cream on your lip area, wait 3-5 minutes, and then gently rub off with a wet cloth. I tried this, and was suprised to see that it did leave me with slightly fuller lips. Oh!, and a red ring around the very edge of them. I'm glad I heeded the instruction to not apply it to the skin surrounding my lips, as it would have also been red.
Essentially, these very temporary products do nothing more than irritate and hence "turn out" the lips a very small amount. My advice is not to buy into this fad. If you you're at all interested in finding out more about lip-plumpers, this site has a detailed list and reviews of many that are currently available. It is an information site for those considering surgical enhancement of the lips, which we neither endorse nor oppose. They're your lips, do what you want with them, but we think they might be beautiful as they are. (1oz for $27.50US)

the Balm - Stainiac

stainiac

Yes, I like Stainiac. It can be used on lips and cheeks, and doesn't dry as quickly as Benetint so you've got more time to blend it. It's waterbased formula doesn't streak, and you can layer it for a more dramatic stain. It comes in three shades, Beauty Queen (berry pink), Homecoming Queen (soft peach), or Prom Queen (rosy pink). ($14)

i.d. bareMinerals Foundation

idbareminerals

We love this line's mineral foundation. The finely crushed powder covers like a weightless foundation. It contains sunscreen but does not have any "preservatives, talc, oil, waxes, fragrances, and other chemicals that can irritate skin and cause breakouts". It is widely available in the US, but still harder to come by in Canada.
As the company itself says, "Remember less is more when applying i.d. bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation", and we believe that is true for all cosmetics. (0.3oz for $25)

GlowFusion Micro-Nutrient Face & Body Natural Protein Tan
(at Sephora only)

glowfusion

This self-tanner promises to deliver "your perfect shade of sun-kissed glow", which is a lofty claim since there are only two shades in the line, Light and Medium and millions of skin colour variations. Nevertheless, I did try this product, and thought it was pretty good. GlowFusion is applied in the form of a clear mist, has no odor and dries quickly. Its all-natural formula claims to be derived from sugarcane and contains vitamins and antioxidants. I'm no scientist, but I googled a few of the ingredients and they are still standard cosmetic formulations.
Other bonuses...it won't stain your clothes, or clog your pores, and it lasts for up to two weeks (didn't last that long on me).
This is a product I would have purchased had it not been $58 Freakin American Dollars for 5oz. There is no law against putting it on at the store at your convenience though.

ModelCo Tan Airbrush in a Can

I'm going to make this short. Love the name of this one. Sounds a bit white trash. Why do I picture Paris Hilton owning Tan in a Can? I tried this one all over my arms, and have to say, I was impressed. Temporary colour immediately, while the self-tanner develops more slowly. It has a 360 degree nozzle, to help you reach those difficult places, and all things considered, you probably need a friend to help you reach some of those places. Maybe a "special friend". You and your "special friend" will also have to cover the floor in a towel while you are spraying yourself.
The best part about this product is that it starts at $7 for 1.7oz, so you can give it a shot without spending much. The largest size is $36 for 7.8oz.

The Body Shop has a new Almond line. Love it. Finally, someone understands me.

Reality Check

Don't get sucked into wearing trendy makeup shade that doesn't suit you.

woohooooo! lesseeeee... where to start, where to start...i am very sad that KA doesn't like benetint! before benetint, in highschool, there was aclinique gel - and that would leave round little blobs where you eventouched your face at all. i like benetint, in fact my complaint would be it isn't stainy enough - doesn't last allllllll day!

as for all the "fusion" products - well, i am your "lip fusion" whore! i have tried the lipfusion products and really like them. i have bought 3 times now, the cler lipgloss and a natural color, i think called "bare". LOVE them. i think they do something, and they taste/feel good and are excellently shiny! i also shelled out for the night time treatment (like 20 bucks more expensive) but i don't know what exactly it is supposed to do. it didn't seem to augment the lipglsses at all. also, i bought their skinfusion (or whatever it is called) firming skin treatment, but i remain unconvinced it is doing anything after about 6 weeks now. i cannot emphasize enough how much i lovve the lip gloss!!!!

hmmm.. next - well, i remember my mom using alberto's V05 on her hair when i was little. she and my grandma wore that clinique fragrance (i guess thats where i got the cheek gel!) ... arg i can't think of the name!!!!!!!!! i love love the smell, but it stinks on me.

and you really are in love with the smell of baby magic lotion? i was thinking you were going to say love's baby soft!

Ok - have to comment on the lip plumpers.

In my desire for thick full "Angelina" lips (that I will never have - but who doens't want them) I have tried Lip Venom and Too Faced. And just like you saw the plumping - but wasn't really satisfied with the whole look. But I did try the Lipfusion available at Sephora and love it.

It actually plumped, without leaving my lips looking funky, but leaving the plumping aside I got the best compliments on that as a lip gloss that I now use it alone much of the time.
