Episode #13: Eye Makeup Brushes and Creme de la Mer

Go give a listen to the full audio for episode #13 of Lip Gloss and Laptops at our podcast page, or download the MP3 file directly (1 hour, 1 minute, 10 seconds). This week we discuss eye brushes, Creme de la Mer (did we discover a big secret about it?), shaving, and (of course) a bit of Second Life.

Brushes

Using good quality brushes will allow you to apply your makeup more easily, and with better results. In this episode we talk about the different types of brushes available, and how to clean them.

Eyeshadow brushes should be made from soft, natural hair such as squirrel or pony. These brushes may seem expensive at the outset, but with proper care, they are an investment that will last you years.

Although there are some wonderful expensive brushes available from companies like Shu Uemura, and Bobbi Brown, you can find some decent quality brushes at much lower prices. Kerry Anne likes the shadow brushes from Sonia Kashuk, available in the US at Target. Canadians can check out the Quo line at Shoppers Drug Mart which do the job quite nicely. Also, check out your local art or craft supply store for brushes that still use natural hair, but will cost you a fraction of the department store price.

Some tips for selecting good brushes can be found here.

Airdrie recently purchased a synthetic eyeliner brush from Bobbi Brown ($28CA, $19US). Synthetic brushes, such as those made from nylon or Taklon are ideal for applying gel eyeliners and cream shadows. They can be easily cleaned using eye make-up solvent, soap, or a quality shampoo. Airdrie also reviewed her favourite angled brush from MAC. This stiff brush has natural hairs, and is great for applying powder to the eyeline and eyebrow.

Creme de la Mer

Creme De La Mer Moisturizing Face Cream is a product Airdrie has been wanting to try for months. At $110 for one ounce, is the Creme de la Mer (containing Miracle Broth) worth the price? Find out the shocking surprise she and Kerry Anne discovered on the show.

Kerry Anne does like the cream for its moisturizing properties, scent and the dewy look it gives her skin, but is not willing to pay that much for it.

Listen to the show, visit the links above, and get your own sample at your local Creme de la Mer distributor to try. Let us know what you think of this "luxury item". We love listener mail.

Kerry Anne gives a shoutout to Blogdorf Goodman (such a clever name), for directing her to a tea fragrance she wants to try.

Citizen Journalism in Corporate Communications

This week Airdrie and Kerry-Anne attended a panel discussion which addressed the place of "Citizen Journalism" (blogs, podcasts, videocasts, Flickr) in Corporate Communications. It was attended by members of the technology, journalism, and public relations communities here in Vancouver, B.C.. The panel members were Kris Krug (our photographer and a super smart guy), Darren Barefoot (who also gets a mention this week's show for his scientific review of shaving razors), Tod Maffin (our Foursevens Network executive producer, among other titles), and Roland Tanglao (who works with Kris at Bryght). Check-out a video snippet of the event here.

Just wanted to chime in with a little brush cleaning info... I actually use Clinique's brush cleaner (only because it was sooo cheap at the Outlets just north of Seattle) about once a week. I also use a leave in conditioner when I clean my brushes. Since it's real hair, I treat it that way. In a pinch, sometimes I use anti-bacterial hand cleaner after using a brush.

oik, so everybody is conditioning their brushes! i wash mine when i think about it - and (is it airdree who has never washed hers??) it will gross you out to see all the brown gunk that will flow from the ferule as you rinse rinse rinse!

i have alot of different brushes from benefit - they were reasonably priced and have lasted well.

back on the foundation show- one of you gals (ws it lipstick or laptop - can't remeber now!!!) talked about foundation brushes and having one and liking it. i bought one from perscriptives like 6 years ago (i am sure it was fairly expensive) AND HAVE NEVER USED IT!!! i feel like i will ruin it or not get it clean! guide me ladies!!!!!!

i have to say i really look forward to the show each week and was shouting out "ferule!" (spelling?) as i listened in bed last night (this upsets my dog). i am going to have to start listening at the actual laptop so that i may get all my responses down!!!!

and great on the creme de la mer thing - i have never even touched it, but it's one of those cult items i have a fixation on...

keep up the great work and good times!

ooooh yaaaaa - do you not think that gnarles barkley singer kind of sounds vaguely like terrence trent darby? the music has been fun - and if anyone runs off to new york, i am coming too - perhaps the crime fighting, beauty bringing team of lipstick and laptop need a sidekick (umm.... not powder puff, maybe like.. nano!) to man the bat cave or something!

I do think it sounds like TT Darby, so I went and looked online, because I heard he was now recording with a different name. It's not him though. The artist formerly known as Terrence Trent Darby is now

Great show - it was my first! I'll definitely be downloading more. Very useful info on brushes!

I have one thing to note, tho... Nivea really does have many harmful ingredients (not sure about preservatives). Check out this link at theecologist.org (I promise, it's not spam!):

Sambycat, maneuvering in SL takes practice, I'm still learning.
Marnie, glad you enjoyed the show. Thanks for the link, that's a great site. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors (and questionable ingredients) where cosmetics are concerned. Part of our mission is to make women aware of the hype. I found a good article on bagged salad too!
